Director of Software Engineering

Job description

We are seeking a Director of Software Engineering to lead our engineering and quality assurance teams in delivering exceptional Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) products. You'll ensure we sustain our high standard of quality, embrace security and privacy by design, and deliver value early and often. You will report to the VP Engineering, who sits on the Executive Leadership Team.

This role enables the team's success by ensuring our teams have what they need to thrive, while coordinating project strategy and managing concerns such as goals, budgets, and timelines. You'll collaborate with primary stakeholders and see that the team devotes its focus to the right priorities for maximum impact. The team will rely on you to track the curve of innovation and support adoption of sharp, modern tools.

Ultimately, you'll be responsible for making the most of our talented teams as we drive the company to new levels of achievement.

This position can be based out of our HQ in Portland, OR, or remote from anywhere in the U.S.

Essential Responsibilities & Duties:

  • Oversee the engineering and quality assurance staff of between 10-15 people, providing hands-on mentorship and career growth opportunities
  • Collaborate on product development initiative planning
  • Establish well-informed priority guidance for where to focus engineering work
  • Set stakeholder expectations and provide ongoing visibility of product initiative status
  • Hire engineers and coordinate their training; support career development
  • Collect and report reliability and performance metrics; direct initiatives to improve bottlenecks
  • Review Product requirements and participate in product brainstorming sessions
  • Provide leadership, management, and vision to the engineering team
  • Manage the SDLC with a focus on continuous improvement of process and measurement
  • Coordination with Security and Compliance teams to proactively design around current and anticipated requirements, and respond to incidents according to company policy
  • Manage all software engineering schedules, budget and resource allocation
  • Manage outsourced development and quality assurance team members
  • Interact with different cross functional teams to ensure successful delivery of each product release
  • Responsible for regular reporting to VP of Engineering on developments and/or urgent incidents

Qualifications:

  • Prior success as a director or similar senior-level management position in an engineering department
  • Leadership ability and strategic insight
  • Appreciable experience in leading a team of back-end and front-end developers
  • Strong record of delivering SaaS products in a demanding business environment
  • Deep familiarity with cloud technologies and modern human-computer interfaces
  • Effective agile project management skills
