Airbnb

Engineering Manager, Pricing & Availability

Job description

Airbnb was born in 2007 when two Hosts welcomed three guests to their San Francisco home, and has since grown to over 4 million Hosts who have welcomed more than 1 billion guest arrivals in almost every country across the globe. Every day, Hosts offer unique stays and experiences that make it possible for guests to connect with communities in a more authentic way.

The Community You Will Join:

The Pricing & Availability Platform team owns the core inventory capabilities of Airbnb’s marketplace.  On the host side, we own the internal APIs and storage that enable hosts to manage pricing and availability settings for their listings, as well as policy-based availability controls managed by the internal Trust and Cities teams. On the guest side, we transform all that data into a format suitable for real-time trip-level computation powering search ranking and guest display of pricing and availability across the full guest journey of booking an Airbnb.

The Difference You Will Make:

As a Pricing & Availability Platform engineering manager, you’ll lead a team of talented, diverse software developers to operate and improve our pricing and availability systems.  This includes day-to-day operations, technical & product deep dives, and strategic planning.  You will work closely with many peer teams to ensure that our systems are designed in a scalable and maintainable manner.

Our engineering managers are responsible for creating the vision and then delivering a solution that is flexible, always available, efficient, and scales with the needs of the business. Each manager brings their own unique skill set, experiences, thought leadership and technical expertise to solve these technical challenges for Airbnb.

A Typical Day:

  • Lead the organizational and technical direction of our current and future pricing and availability platform.
  • Build a robust team by attracting top talent, mentoring individuals and managing conflict.
  • Nurture a culture of technical quality from design, through code review, to production.
  • Collaborate with internal teams across Search, Bookings, Host Tools, Payments, Tax, Cities, and Trust to gain agreement by developing and communicating a clear and impactful vision and priorities for the team.
  • Carefully plan, track, and report on work of the team, identifying problems early.

Your Expertise:

  • 5+ years of engineering management experience, with 9+ years of relevant software development industry experience in a fast paced tech environment
  • Expertise with backend systems in large-scale service-oriented architectures
  • Good judgment in making tradeoffs to balance short-term business needs with long-term technical quality
  • Strong understanding of how deep backend systems are expressed in the UX shown to customers
  • End-to-end mentality that transcends team boundaries and helps find globally optimal solutions
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work well within a team and with teams across the engineering organization
  • Passionate about efficiency, availability, system quality and user experience
