About the Role
Senior Product Engineers leverage support from subject matter experts to learn and manage all aspects of their designated fiber laser products. This role serves as the primary decision maker and technical expert for released products and provides crucial design and specification guidance to NPI programs. Successful Senior Product Engineers excel at combining quantitative data and qualitative feedback to make complex decisions/tradeoffs that best position nLIGHT products and engineering teams to be successful. In addition to internally facing technical leadership, this position works closely with product directors, sales, and service to connect the engineering and manufacturing teams to external customer feedback and requirements. Excellent communication skills, a passion for learning and an enthusiastic attitude are all a must for this highly collaborative role.
Your Responsibilities
- Ownership of product specifications, testing requirements and product design changes
- Manage product configurations, part numbers and BoMs
- Provide technical guidance, approvals and drive schedules for component, supplier, and product qualifications
- Track key metrics of product cost, reliability, and quality to identify and lead continuous improvement opportunities in line with business objectives
- Estimate costs for proposed product changes and calculate ROIs to help determine go/no-go and prioritization. Change requests will come from both internal and external customers and require very thoughtful analysis
- Develop and distribute technical product bulletins to notify customers of changes and work with key account managers to ensure key customers are provided with the necessary product specifications and information
- Review and analyze data from factory failures, service activities and RMAs to ensure proactive containment and corrective actions
- Work with R&D teams to ensure new technologies are compatible with existing products, specifications, and cost objectives
- Coordinate with operations and planning teams on tactical production priorities and shepherd engineering/qualification units through the manufacturing line
Your Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in STEM or similar discipline
- 5 years' related experience including product, project, or process ownership
- Experience with lasers, electro-optics, opto-mechanics, or other multidisciplinary systems is strongly preferred
- General knowledge of statistics, data analytics and database structures preferred

Salary, level based on experience, education, and skills:
- Product Engineer II: $80,000 - $95,000
- Sr Product Engineer: $90,000 - $115,000
